Prior Learning Survey Definitions
Advanced Placement (AP):
A program that offers college-level courses and examinations to high school students. College credit will be granted to students who earn a three (3) or higher in an Advanced Placement examination College credit shall be granted for a specific college course for each AP examination that covers substantially similar material.
International Baccalaureate (IB):
A program that offers college-level courses and examinations to high school students. IB courses are often part of a program of study like Math, Science, English. IB courses require students to take a final exam to receive credit for the course. College credit shall be granted for a specific college course for each AP examination that covers substantially similar material.
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP):
A group of standardized tests created and administered by College Board. These tests assess college-level knowledge in thirty-six (36) subject areas and provide a mechanism for earning college credits without taking college courses. Equivalent course credits shall be granted when a CLEP examination covers material that is substantially similar to an existing college course.
Department of Defense’s Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DSST or Dantes):
Credit-by-examination tests originated by the United States Department of Defense’s Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) program. The program is an extensive series of thirty-three (33) examinations in college subject areas that are comparable to the final or end-of-course examinations in lower and upper division college undergraduate courses. Equivalent course credits shall be granted when a DSST examination covers material that is substantially similar to an existing college course.
College degree:
Is a certified college degree/diploma/certificate (undergraduate or graduate) from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.
Transfer credit:
Transfer credits (semester, or quarterly) from regionally or nationally accredited institutions are evaluated for academic content against Inver Hills’ courses.
Joint Services Transcript (JST):
A synchronized transcript presenting data for the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard. The JST identifies a person’s professional military education, training and occupation experiences achieved by service members and veterans. The purpose of an American Council of Education (ACE) military review is to bridge the gap between professional military education and postsecondary education. Equivalent course credits shall be granted upon review of the course material completed and is determined to be substantially similar to an existing college course.
Community College of the Air Force:
For military members who have completed a Community College of the Air Force credit-awarding course. Equivalent course credits shall be granted upon review of the course material completed and is determined to be substantially similar to an existing college course.
Military Occupational Specialties (MOS):
A nine-character code used by the United States Army and Marine Corp to identify a specific job held. There are hundreds of MOS Codes across both the Army and Marine Corp.
United States Air Force, a system of Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC):
An alphanumeric code used by the United States Air Force to identify a specific job held.
Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC):
A system of naval ratings and designates for the United States Navy four-digit code that identifies a specific job held and skills and abilities.

American Council on Education (ACE) transcript:
The ACE transcript verifies credentials for a college or employer, and includes information on the learning outcomes, competencies, credit recommendations, and other course details.
Certification:
A credential that is earned to demonstrate specific skills or knowledge. Certifications are usually tied to an occupation, technology, or industry and are often offered by a professional organization or a company that specializes in a particular field or technology.
License:
A credential that is earned and granted by an official or legal authority to perform in an area of specialty. For example, a Realtors license.
